The Model Garage, in Berkeley CA, is an independent auto repair shop (not a dealership) that specializes in Volvo, Toyota, Lexus and Scion cars. We have current factory diagnostic systems for all of the cars we service. Our five mechanics are conscientious professionals who will keep your car purring. We offer, customer-friendly service and repair. In business since 1981, we love dealing with the customers in our area. Quality and honesty are our strengths.

Don opened the Model Garage, Inc. in August, 1981, with his friend and partner, Peter Edinoff (who passed away last year). Always interested in mechanical repair, he completed the auto technology certificate at Merritt College after finishing his degree in Japanese studies at UC Berkeley. He loves both car repair and people, especially the people in our area. The shop is a good spot to practice his saxophone once the day is over and it helps announce coffee break. He and his wife, Dorothy, travel when they can and enjoy their work and free time when at home.
Alen started with us in January, 2012 and was a great addition. Efficient and clean, he is doing a wonderful job for us and our customers. Family is very important to him and, with two children, he never gets bored. If you come early, you may see him out front since it makes sense for him to beat the rush.
Humberto started working here in July of 2007. He started working on cars in Peru in 1972 and switched to the United States in 1984. We value his wide experience. He still plays soccer at a high level.
Jimmy has been working on Volvos since 1980. He joined our team in June of 1994 and is our go-to guy for older Volvos. He enjoys going to both ranges—the firing range and the driving range. When the sun goes behind a cloud and it starts drizzling, he’s in his element and can be heard saying “Ah, the sun is out.”
Robert came to us in September, 2011. He is our first service advisor other than Don and Peter. Robert is a real car guy—he put together his own replica Cobra, for example. In the field since 1979, he has been a mechanic, a tool man, and, since 1976, a service advisor. If you have one of your children with you, ask Robert about the toy cars we have under the counter.
Kyle joined us December 1, 2014. He's young and energetic and has a great deal of experience for his age, having worked at a Toyota dealer for the last five years. Cars are his hobby as well as his job. The Monte Carlo muscle car you may see in our parking lot is an example of his interests.
The new voice you may have heard when you called us belongs to Bruce, our recent addition at service advisor. Bruce has been working in the automotive industry since 2010 moving over from several other interesting careers. He's managed a business and is very customer oriented. He and Robert work well together, trying hard to bring you the best in customer service.
Samol came to us in May, 2012. His technical knowledge makes him our go-to guy for late model Volvos. He has wide experience—diesels, airplanes, other makes of cars—but he communicates best with Volvos. His family and volleyball are two of his other passions.
Zena started at the Model Garage in May of 2010 when Peter got sick and Susan had to take care of him. She not only took over the office and made it hum, she knows the internet and computers due to her background in customer service and tech support for computer software. She’s a banana slug (UC Santa Cruz graduate), and she doubles as our official dog greeter.
Peter Edinoff, a founder of the Model Garage when it was opened in 1981, passed away in December of 2012. He was proud of his contribution to the shop. We miss him, his mandolin playing, and his Brooklyn sense of humor.
